Brittney Griner was back in court today (July 26) for her fifth hearing after being detained in a Russian jail for months as her defense team fought for her release. The Olympic gold medalist and WNBA standout was stopped earlier this year while passing through an airport. Griner’s attorneys contended that the little quantity was used as a painkiller, recommended by her doctor, despite Russian authorities’ claims that she was caught in possession of hashish oil, an illegal narcotic in the nation.
Griner entered a guilty plea to the allegations a few weeks ago, but according to her legal team’s statements to ABC News, that decision was only made after consulting with Griner’s Russian attorneys.
